Vienna Halloween Parade

Great picture of Madison HS students marching in the 65th Annual Vienna Halloween Parade for Ryan McElveen, Chap Petersen, Sharon Bulova and me!  I'm there, too, carrying the banner.  It was so nice to be back on Maple Avenue for one of my own family traditions.  Thanks so much to the students and to the parade organizers!

"Opportunity Neighborhoods" Pool Resources

My hope is that, four years from now if I'm back on the campaign trail, I won't have to list persistent achievement gaps as one of our challenges here in Fairfax County. "Opportunity neighborhoods" bring county and school resources together for our neediest neighborhoods.

Respecting Students as Future Leaders
I agree wholeheartedly with this message: that, above all, we must respect students as creative problem-solvers, so that they can become leaders in their communities.

Fairfax County Public Schools
FCPS News
FCPS administers public schools in Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax. With over 175,000 students enrolled, FCPS is the largest public school system in the Baltimore-Washington and Northern Virginia Metropolitan Area. The most notable commitment that Fairfax County makes to its school system is the allocation of 53.5% of its 2011 fiscal budget to the school system. Including state and federal government contributions, along with citizen and corporate contributions, this brings the 2010 fiscal budget for the school system to $2.2 billion. The school system has estimated that, based on the 2010 fiscal budget, the county will invest $12,550 in each student during the 2010-2011 school year.
